The inaugural Adelaide Thinker in Residence, Herbert Girardet – an internationally acclaimed urban ecologist and documentary film-maker – made many recommendations for how Adelaide could become more ‘green’. A number of the recommendations set out in his then ground-breaking two-volume report Creating a Sustainable City, published in 2003, were adopted by the South Australian Government.
Hosted by the Thinker in Residence Program, the residency received support from the Capital City Committee, the South Australian Government, the Office of Sustainability, Adelaide City Council, and the Body Shop. During his residency, Girardet gave a public lecture, ‘Making Adelaide a Green City’, to a capacity audience at the Adelaide Town Hall; participated in roundtable discussions; and addressed some 2 500 people in numerous public presentations.
We supported this residency as part of a Capital City Committee project to develop Adelaide as a ‘Green City’.
